SALT LAKE CITY — Junior quarterback Travis Wilson has been cleared to play football this fall, the University of Utah announced Tuesday afternoon.

Wilson, who was sidelined with an intracranial artery injury at the end of the 2013 season, was cleared to play in spring football earlier this year, but was not allowed to participate in any contact drills.

The news of Wilson being cleared to play comes as great news to head coach Kyle Whittingham, who said Wilson’s health has been the team’s top priority in the offseason.

“Obviously, it’s great news that Travis has been medically cleared to play football again,” Whittingham said in a statement. “Travis’ health was our No. 1 concern, and we’re relieved for him and his family that he is OK.”

Wilson approached spring practice with the assumption he would be cleared to play in the fall. Now that he has been cleared, he said he’s ready to get to work and prepare for the season to start.

“I had a feeling nothing would change from the previous scan, so I’ve been working to get back into shape,” Wilson said in a statement. “I feel totally comfortable about returning to football and full contact. I believe I’ve been playing with this condition for a while and never even knew about it. I’m going to keep playing just the way I’ve always played. I knew something positive would come out of the whole thing.”

Wilson is expected to return as the starter this fall, but will be in a quarterback battle with a lot of depth at the position. Oklahoma transfer Kendal Thompson and incoming freshman Donovan Isom have yet to be seen in action, but they are expected to contend for the job. Last year’s replacement quarterback Adam Schulz and redshirt freshman Connor Manning and Brandon Cox are expected to be in the mix as well.
