Friday, Park City Medical Center celebrated its newest feature of the hospital, a community garden. The celebration kicked off with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new building and announced plans to expand services available at the hospital. Attendees then walked over to the garden area to plant various fruits and vegetables that will be growing there.

Intermountain employees along with community members planted tomatoes, corn, various kinds of squash and berries as well as apple trees. After all roots were safely in the ground, 200 butterflies were released into the area to help pollinate the new garden.

This is the first hospital to undertake such a project, and Intermountain Vice President and CEO Laura Kaiser says this is just the beginning. “It just seemed so natural to me to have that here; this is the first of many.”

Members of the community are encouraged to work in the garden and take what they need. Community leader Becky Kearns hopes the garden will help encourage everyone to eat a little healthier. “We all like to buy organic, but the price tag in grocery stores is so expensive. Many people can’t afford it and so we’re really, really excited about what that’s going to bring, especially to our low-income population.”

Watch the video for a preview of the garden’s beginnings. In the meantime, Park City Medical Center encourages the surrounding community to enjoy the fruits and vegetables available and come support the garden.
