SANDY — Alvaro Saborio left for San Jose, Costa Rica, two weeks ago, expecting his next stop to be in Brazil for this summer’s 2014 World Cup.

Fate had other plans, though — and it saw him back in Salt Lake City by the first week of June.

The Real Salt Lake forward underwent successful surgery Monday to repair a broken fifth metatarsal on his right foot at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. The team expects him to be out for 3-4 months.

“I’m pleased to say that Alvaro’s surgery went very well this afternoon,” said Dr. Andrew Cooper, RSL’s team orthopedic surgeon, in a statement. “We inserted a screw and injected some bone marrow around the fracture site to promote healing. I expect him to get back to 100 percent once the fracture fully heals.”

Saborio fractured the bone in his right foot while training with the Costa Rican national team last Thursday. The all-time leading scorer for RSL will not participate in this summer’s World Cup.

The 32-year-old Saborio had six goals and two assists in 10 games for RSL in 2014 prior to his call-up by Los Ticos.

Saborio’s injury is the latest to befall an RSL striker this year. Forward Robbie Findley only recently returned from offseason surgery, and the team’s co-leading scorer Joao Plata missed last Saturday’s 4-0 loss at Seattle with a hamstring injury — his second of 2014. Plata is expected to return to the lineup by the team’s home match against the Portland Timbers on Saturday, June 7, though it is possible he could see time Wednesday at Columbus, as well.
