Jordan survived a valiant upset bid by Pleasant Grove to win the 5A state baseball championship.

The Beetdiggers needed just one win against the Vikings to win their second baseball title and first since 2007.

That turned out to be very difficult.

Pleasant Grove won Game 1 4-3 thanks in part to a great performance on the mound by Easton Walker. He struck out nine batters in Game 1 while Jordan left 12 runners on base. Payton Henry provided the game-winning RBI with a two-run double in the top of the 5th inning.

It was the Vikings seventh straight tournament victory after falling in the tournament opener to Viewmont.

That seventh win earned the Vikings a shot at the 5A title and their chances looked good after taking an early lead in Game 2.

An RBI single by Jade Smoot gave Pleasant Grove a 1-0 lead.

Jordan was able to swing momentum their way in the 3rd inning.

With the game tied 1-1 Mason Krueger stepped up to the plate and hit a lead-off home run to give his team the lead. Drew Lisk hit a 2-RBI single that capped off a 3-run inning for Jordan and gave them the lead for good.

Pleasant Grove tried to rally with two outs in the 7th inning.

Payton Henry hit a double off the right-field wall that came six inches away from tying the game.

With Henry in scoring position Jordan pitcher Morgan Gomez finished off a complete game by forcing a ground out that set off a championship celebration.

Jordan held off Pleasant Grove 4-3 to win the 2014 5A state baseball championship.
