PROVO — A missing cow's plight is getting extra attention after her concerned owner put up an eye-catching sign on a road.

Along Geneva Road in Provo, there are more houses nowadays than farms, and drivers may have wondered what's the story behind a sign that reads: "Dude, where's my cow?"

Matt Baker purchased a nearby pasture for his four cows but one cow, named Betsy and worth $2,300, has been missing since March 10.

“I found footprints running up here to the fence, this board was broken down, there was hair on it,” Baker said. “I could see right where she jumped the fence and footprints headed out to Geneva Road.”

He looked all over the neighborhood and police never got any calls about a runaway cow. Baker posted a sign about a lost cow with his contact information to help find Betsy, who may have a calf with her by now.

“She also has a metal ear tag in her right ear and a large “B” branded on her left shoulder,” he said.

But for passers-by, the lost cow sign was too much to resist a prank, and soon, Baker's phone wouldn't stop ringing.

“I got two calls in 15 minutes asking, is there really free beef?” Baker said. “And I said no, I think it's some prankster, but obviously someone took the time to make this sign and post it next to mine.”

And a few days after that, a teenage boy modified the sign to ask a girl to the prom.

“Apparently it said something like, 'I would be a lost cow unless you go to prom with me,’ ” he said.

The lost cow sign worked for the teen, and she replied with another sign that read, “I ain't telling no cow tail, I would be utterly moved to go to prom with you, hopefully I'm not grounded.”

When they boy's parents found out, they had him replace the lost cow sign, Baker added. And it was the teen prankster that came up with the idea of the latest sign.

“They offered to come and help me and put the new sign up and I said you have to think of something clever this time," Baker said. "So he came up with this 'Dude, where's my cow?' slogan to let people know it's still missing and we are still looking for it.”

Baker isn't worried yet about Betsy being someone's dinner and figures she's joined someone else's cows who don't realize it yet.
