CENTERVILLE — A Ford Explorer that rolled off a U-Haul trailer has been reunited with the owners.

Police received reports around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday of an abandoned vehicle on the edge of 382 N. Frontage Road, according to Centerville Assistant Police Chief Paul Child. Witnesses told police that a Chevy pickup truck was pulling a U-Haul trailer with a Ford Explorer on the trailer. The Explorer wasn't secured properly and it rolled off the trailer while it was moving.

The Explorer rolled into a curb and came to a stop. The vehicle was inspected by Centerville police and then impounded.

Child said an older couple had exited the freeway in Centerville to get fuel. When they began driving again, the driver didn't notice the vehicle had rolled off the U-Haul trailer and they kept driving north on the freeway. The couple were stopped in the Ogden area at a hotel when they realized the Ford Explorer was missing.

The couple then contacted their insurance company and the insurance company was able to track down the vehicle to the impound lot, Child said. The owners were then reunited with their vehicle Wednesday afternoon.

"It was fortunate that it happened where it did and not on the freeway or at high speeds," Child said of the incident. "It just serves as a reminder that when you are towing something that you are using all the safety chains properly. It is critical to make sure that those things are properly secured."

Childs said no citations were issued in connection with the incident.

"No damage was done to anything," he said. "We just hope their lesson was learned."
