UINTAH COUNTY — Boaters at one Utah reservoir will now have an easier time accessing the water, thanks to a new access trail that was eight years in the making.

In past years, boaters looking to access Steinaker Reservoir from camping areas and national forest areas had a hard time launching at designated docking areas. Steinaker State Park manager Mike Murray said this created problems.

"On years like this one where the water level at the lake is so low, our customers have some difficulty launching boats. Also, the distance to the ATV trailheads were relatively far away, causing people to have to haul their machines out of the park. We found that people simply opted to go elsewhere," Murray said.

Campers at Steinacker State Park, located just north of Vernal, can now enjoy easier access to the lake, via a new ATV connector trail, Murray said. The project has been eight years in the making and will open up access from the state recreational area to BLM land and national forest land.

“Now people can camp at the park and bring their ATVs and ride right from their campsite instead of having to haul their machines to a trailhead. We hope that people will start taking advantage of this new feature,” Murray said.

The new ATV trail is six miles long and connects the state park with Doc's Beach, Red Mountain, Taylor Mountain and Forest Service areas.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the opening of the trail, and state and national representatives were on hand to celebrate the completion of the project.

The trail will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, conditions permitting, and will be closed during winter months.
