SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man has been taken into custody after a SWAT team responded to the Wedgewood Willow Apartments following a welfare check.

Police received a call around 11:45 a.m. Saturday regarding the welfare of a 23-year-old man. The man had made threatening remarks over the phone to his mother who was not in the area, and his mother called police.

Officers spoke to the man through the door and over the phone for a time when the man stopped speaking with police for about 2½ hours.

South Salt Lake police called in the Unified Police Department SWAT team.

"Once we brought SWAT in, we wanted to err on the side of caution," Gary Keller of the Salt Lake City Police Department said. "We had to evacuate probably about 54 units in this apartment complex."

Eventually the man was taken into custody. His name has not been released yet.

Police say they have a history with the 23-year-old. He is said to have threatened neighbors with a knife in the past.

"If you observe someone acting out of character, if you know the person and their behavior becomes bizarre, definitely call police. Let us start working on it and try and resolve the issue," Keller said. "Don't put yourself in harm's way."

The investigation is ongoing. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
