LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Sophomore quarterback Montell Cozart has won the starting job at Kansas, beating out Jake Heaps and T.J. Millweard after a strong spring game.

Cozart was 6 of 10 for 58 yards while running for 70 yards and two touchdowns in a leading his blue team to a 20-10 victory over the white team last Saturday.

Heaps, who lost the starting job to Cozart last season, was just 3 of 9 for 41 yards. Millweard, a transfer from UCLA, was 2 of 8 for 16 yards.

Weis opened the quarterback competition in spring practice, and it was expected to continue into the fall. Instead, he said in a brief statement Thursday that Cozart earned the job.

The Jayhawks open their season Sept. 6 against Southeast Missouri State.
