WEST VALLEY CITY — Shots fired by a man in a car went through the wall of an apartment building and hit a teenage boy Wednesday, police said.

A 17-year-old boy was struck by a bullet in the ankle while he was sitting inside an apartment at 4535 S. Dean Drive, police said. The incident occurred at 11:50 a.m., according to West Valley City public information officer Roxeanne Vainuku.

"A man pulled into the parking lot driveway area of this apartment building, got into some sort of a verbal argument with the people who were outside of the apartment, and ended up firing a gun," she said.

Investigators said it appeared the man fired at least two rounds, both of which went through the wall of the apartment building. The bullets entered the kitchen area of one of the apartments, police said.

The boy who was hit didn't appear to have been involved in the argument, Vainuku said.

"It sounds like he was just sitting inside when this all happened," she said.

He was transported to the hospital in fair condition and is expected to recover, she said.

Police are talking to witnesses to obtain more information about the man who fired the gun. Investigators said they believe the man was the only occupant of a dark vehicle.
