SHREDDINGTON — It’s hard to play a face-melting guitar solo, and guitarist Toni Martinez learned that sometimes it’s even harder to shred when you own a cat.

Martinez is also known as Tony Waka. He’s a professional guitarist from Spain with a solid career that includes touring and teaching. He likes to share his talents by making YouTube videos of songs he’s perfected and lessons to help others hone their craft.

Proud of his most recent mastery, Martinez decided to record it and share it. But his cat, Botitas, had different ideas.

Martinez successfully shoos the cat away before starting. But about 30 seconds in, Botitas crawls back up on Martinez’s lap to enjoy the concert.

And Botitas is not going anywhere.

Martinez tried to shoo the cat away again, but Botitas and his claws are tenacious. So Martinez gives his cat an affectionate rub and keeps shredding.

But Botitas is not done.

The cat decides to make it a duet by licking the strings. But when he is denied by Martinez, things turn ugly and Botitas begins to bite Martinez.

A bit more biting on Botitas’ side and a bit more playing and pushing on Martinez’s side, and Martinez gives up the battle with defeated laughter. Botitas remains in his lap and begins his reign as king of the hill.

It’s difficult to be hardcore when you’re defeated in a shredding contest by your own cat.
