KENNEWICK, Wash. — A Washington state woman is working to bring creativity and humor to corrective helmets for babies.

Many infants are prescribed helmets to fix skull-shape issues. For some parents, having to explain the conspicuous helmet can get old.

Artist Paula Strawn said she first thought about painting helmets when she encountered parents and caretakers who were tired of the attention their children were receiving from their corrective helmets.

“I believe a fun and friendly design is an attitude-changer for parents, family, friends and anyone who comes in contact with baby,” Strawn said on her Facebook page. “Instead of pitying or worried looks, you now have people saying ‘Oh, how cute!’ and you can have a simple conversation about it.”

Strawn has painted over 1,300 helmets during the last 12 years, according to her Facebook page. Parents from over the world have shipped their infants’ helmets to her Kennewick, Washington home, where Strawn has transformed the basic white plastic material into pilot caps, cloud scenes and meadows of flowers.

Prices for helmet art range from $150 to $350, with the amount going up for custom designs, Strawn said. She tries to have a one-day turnaround time on all orders, and encourages clients to come to her studio if possible and wait on-site while she works.
