PAYSON — A bad shipment of gasoline recently made its way to a Payson gas station and into some customers’ cars.

Payson resident Bill Gronberg couldn’t figure out why his car was giving him problems. “It started with great difficulty,” Gronberg said. “You could not get any RPMs out of it. It would quit on you, and I probably started it 15 times.”

He managed to get his car to a mechanic who said it appeared the car had a full tank of bad gas. The mechanics “put the computer on it and it indicated it was running lean,” Gronberg said.

The Smith’s grocery store gas station in Payson was Gronberg’s normal spot because of the discount point system it provides its loyal customers, and he had filled up his tank there the night before.

After calling the company to complain, Smith’s wanted to help. “They’re responsive to the community, apparently, and they want to keep you and other people as customers, of course,” Gronberg said.

According to a Smith’s spokesperson, the station received an overnight shipment of gas that had something wrong with it. The spokesperson hadn’t made contact with the supplier and did not want to name them at the time of the interview. However, the spokesperson did say the truck visited a few gas stations in the Payson area.

Smith’s flushed all the gas out of the Payson station and got another supply.

Smith’s wanted to make it right for all the affected customers like Gronberg. “Smith’s did offer a rental, but I declined because I didn’t want to be responsible for another car,” Gronberg said.

The bad gasoline may have affected customers who bought gas Monday night or Tuesday morning in Payson. Anyone who may have been affected by the bad gasoline should contact the gas station where they bought it.
