Pitta shines in return for Baltimore

SALT LAKE CITY — Dennis Pitta was committed to the idea of making a comeback and playing a role this season for the Baltimore Ravens.

Luckily for Baltimore, the former BYU tight end is returning when the Ravens need him most — in the middle of a run to the playoffs. Pitta had six catches for 48 yards and caught a touchdown in a 29-26 Baltimore win over Minnesota.

This week in the NFL featured several close finishes, and several alumni of local schools were involved. Paul Kruger made four tackles and had two sacks for Cleveland, but the Browns blew a late fourth-quarter lead in New England and were beaten by the Patriots, 27-26. In Pittsburgh, Utah alumni Koa Misi, Derrick Shelby and Paul Soliai combined for six tackles as the Miami Dolphins held on late to beat the Steelers, winning 34-28. Brice McCain made four tackles for Houston, but the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Texans, 27-20, to win their third straight game.

Star Lotulelei made two tackles for Carolina in a 31-13 loss to New Orleans. Also, Steve Smith caught six passes for 49 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers. Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs returned to their winning ways, beating the Washington Redskins, 45-10. Smith completed 14 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Teammate Sean Smith made two tackles for Kansas City.

Other notable defensive performances include Eric Weddle’s four tackles in a 37-14 San Diego win over the New York Giants. Also, Ezekiel Ansah made three tackles in Detroit’s 34-20 loss at snowy Philadelphia.

Bobby Wagner made nine tackles for Seattle in a 19-17 loss at San Francisco. Robert Turbin had two carries for 12 yards in the Seahawks’ loss. Weber State alumnus Paul McQuistan started for Seattle.

Highland High grad Haloti Ngata made a tackle for Baltimore in its win over Minnesota.
