PROVO — Provo City School District is proposing a $90 million bond to rebuild five schools.
Tuesday, the district announced its proposal to rebuild Rock Canyon Elementary School, Edgemont Elementary School, Sunset View Elementary School, Provost Elementary School and Dixon Middle School. The district is holding five community open houses to discuss the proposal, which will be voted on next year.
The four elementary schools would cost between $13 million and $16 million to rebuild and Dixon Middle School would cost about $32 million, said Caleb Price, coordinator of communications and public relations for Provo District.
Last year, the district formed a committee of community members to examine the schools and make recommendations.
“The majority of the information that the board used to make this proposition came from the recommendations of that group of parents from the community,” Price said.
They found the five schools, which are between 50 and 83 years old, were restricted by old wiring and electrical components in using new classroom technology, Price said.
Additionally, though the buildings were constructed according to code at the time, they are not up to current codes. The buildings have had some minor remodeling for “band-aid fixes,” Price said, but nothing major.
“As with any old structure, there are problems that go along with it,” Price said.
Provo School District is currently composed of 13 elementary schools, two middle schools, three high schools and one preschool.
