SALT LAKE CITY — Fully padded up the Utes took the practice field for day five of fall camp and the coaches told us that the tempo is still not fast enough.

In accordance with the rest of college football trying to speed up the tempo (only half joking) the Utes are trying to do the same thing and on day five of camp the tempo wasn't where the head coach and offensive coordinator wanted.

"We have got to get better, that was not a very good performance," Dennis Erickson said. "We didn't go fast today. We've got to go faster and play faster than that."

Kyle Whittingham added, "The tempo in the live work slowed down. That's the reason you run high-tempo is so you can force the defense to be on their heels and wear them down."

One of the bright spots from camp today happens to also be where one of the biggest question marks of this team is, the defensive backfield.

"We have to become better tacklers, that was a big negative from last year, and got to become play makers on the ball," safeties coach Morgan Scalley said after practice. "An interception from Reggie Porter in live work, more of that, more of that."

Whittingham added, "That was the most encouraging thing of practice was the corner play."

Head Coach Kyle Whittingham also mentioned that because of the medical retirement of Reshawn Hooker and also Moses Folauhola, they brought in 17-year-old grey shirt Clarence Smith out of Arizona. They were going to bring him in January and he mentioned that they will bring in one more player.
