SALT LAKE CITY — In this Sunday Edition, a closer look at why it is becoming increasing difficult to climb up the income and wealth ladder. Plus, Doug Wright takes on the issue of compulsory education.

Segment 1:

The American Dream used to set us apart from other countries. It's that idea that if you work hard enough, everyone has equal opportunity for a richer and better life.

But there is evidence that shows the American dream is fading away. Financial inequality between the rich and the poor has been rising in the United States and in Utah over the past few decades. Richard Piatt talked to the authors of a Utah Foundation study that examined the Great Recession's impact on economic mobility.

Segment 2:Richard Piatt continued his discussion of the American Dream with Utah Foundation president Steve Kroes and Tracy Gruber, policy analyst for Voices for Utah Children. They looked at intergenerational poverty and why the widening of the income gap should matter to everyone.

Segment 3:Utah state Sen. Aaron Osmond is calling for an end to compulsory education in his state. He says forcing children to attend school is outdated. Doug Wright offered his opinion.
