The BYU Cougars began Week 3 of spring ball on Monday. Once again, the Cougars practiced outside, taking advantage of the spring weather.

Overall, offensive coordinator Robert Anae was pleased with the effort, but knows there's still along way to go. "I'd say we're headed in the right direction," Anae said. "It's not because a lack of effort; they're trying, but the effort needs to be faster and it's need to be harder."

Quarterback Taysom Hill continues to run the first-team offense. When asked if Hill is starting to separate himself from the pack, Coach Anae decided to praise the quarterbacks as a whole instead of individually. "The quarterback position as a group is doing really well," Anae said. "They (QBs) took a collective step forward yesterday (assuming he meant the last practice, since yesterday was Sunday) and for the most part today."

For the first time this spring, the media had a chance to talk with new defensive end Austin Holt. Holt, a tight end through the 2012 season, moved to the defensive side of the football at the urging of head coach Bronco Mendenhall. "We talked for months," Holt said. "It was just decided that they needed some help on the d-line the upcoming year. I met with them (defensive coaches) a couple days ago and I said, you know what, maybe I should've changed a little earlier; it's been a good change...very happy."

Holt is not the first BYU tight end to make the switch to defensive line. Former Cougar Vic So'oto did the exact same thing as a junior, and during a recent visit to Provo, he gave Holt some pointers.

"He (Vic) came back last week; he wished me best of luck and he showed me some pointers. He said it was the best decision he ever made to go on the defensive side, and you can see where he's at now. He said I can see it in you too."

Austin said Coach Mendenhall, as a true defensive coach, looked at him in his white (defense) jersey and told him, "I like you a lot better now."

Prior to spring ball starting, all the talk was about BYU's new offensive coaching staff. After seven practices, Coach Anae likes what he sees.

"The staff, to be able to get the guys doing it at this point, to execute at the level we're doing it, is really really a welcome surprise."

Defensive back Mike Hague felt his hamstring tighten up during Monday's practice, and was told to shut it down for the day. BYU officials said Hague will be monitored moving forward.

Hague is still waiting formal word from the NCAA on whether or not he will get another year of eligibility after missing most of the season last year with a calf injury.
