SALT LAKE CITY - Utah linebacker Brian Blechen didn't want to talk about the bee flying in his mouth and stinging him in the throat, but he did anyway, reluctantly.
It was nice to see #4 back out on the field after his encounter with "The Bee." This was not the first encounter that Blechen has had with a bee; he has been stung in the eye before.
The best part of the interview was when my good friend and colleague Dirk Facer asked Blechen if he realized that Utah was the Beehive State. It was a funny exchange and "Beegate", or whatever people call it is now over.
My first impression of this football team (having not been able to see the first practice) is that they are fast.
I realize that I have said that every year, but every year it seems to be true and Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham also mentioned it.
"I think we're much faster. I've said that seven straight years now but I think that has been the case," Whittingham said.
Having witnessed it today, they team looks speedy, with none faster than receiver Dres Anderson. He was taking reps with the first team and it looked like Jordan Wynn would just try and get him the ball as quick as he could so he could make a play.
"Dres is so fast, he could score on any play," Wynn said after practice.
Jordan Wynn looks more comfortable taking snaps from under center. He mentioned after the first day of practice that under center was what he was used to from high school, and it showed today. Every snap I saw was from under center.
He looks comfortable in his drops and more in a rhythm. Going back to spring ball, it was so tough to watch the offense. They couldn't do anything.
The biggest boost to the offense has to be that Jordan Wynn is back healthy and seems poised to lead the team. Coach Whittingham mentioned several times that just having Jordan back was a big deal.
Wynn had high praise for his offense and said, "we know what we are doing; we just have to go out and execute it now."
It was nice to be in media mix with Keith McGill. He seems like a really nice kid who is stoked to be at Utah. It was fun listening to him talk about why he chose Utah.
"I love the coaches and all the players, everything that they stand for," McGill said.
This was McGill's first practice in Rice-Eccles Stadium and he mentioned that he was anxious to hear the home crowd on Saturdays, especially the MUSS.
Saturday's practice assures to be a little more competitive as shoulder pads will be introduced.
"It will be good to get the gear on tomorrow, that's when you should start to see some separation on the depth chart," Whittingham said.
