PROVO -- Each week we spotlight a different player from the BYU Cougars to learn more about their life. This week, we take a look at two redshirt players: Anson Winder and Matt Carlino.

Winder, a Nevada native, is a shooting guard with the ability to score in the post as well as from the perimeter. While at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Winder helped his team win back-to-back state titles his junior and senior year.

Winder was recruited be Nevada, SMU, Portland, UC Riverside and Idaho, but chose to play at BYU.

"It was an easy choice," Winder said. "I really started following them, but even then I had no clue that I would come here."

Carlino, a freshman transfer from UCLA, is a point guard with excellent ball handling skills, making him a threat off the dribble. Carlino played two years for Highland High in Arizona before playing his last year for Bloomington South in Indiana.

After some encouragement from his dad and friends, Carlino decided to leave UCLA to redshirt for the Cougars, where he looks to replace Jimmer Fredette as point guard.

"I'm replacing the best at that position," Carlino said, "the best player in the country. In that sense it's like, ‘Wow, how much can you expect.'"

Both Winder and Carlino look to make an impact for the Cougars with Fredette and Jackson Emery graduating after this season. Right now, they look to make their team better while playing for the scout team.

"You've got to give the guys a feel of what the opposing team's going to bring and just get them ready for the game," Winder said. "That's what we try our hardest to do. Coach wants us to go hard."

Asked what Winder brings to the team, Carlino said, "He's pretty smooth with what he does. He'll slow you down with his pace, but really gets to where he wants to go."

"[Matt] just improved the team once he got here," Winder said. "We play together a lot and we just work our hardest to get the team ready."
