TOOELE — An officer was injured and a dog was killed Friday morning following a domestic disturbance in Tooele, police said.

At 10:15 a.m. Friday, a Tooele City police officer responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence at 205 E. Broadway in Tooele, according to Officer Tanya Turnbow of Tooele police. It sounded as if the male and female involved were “going to kill each other,” according to a neighbor who reported the incident.

Upon arrival, the officer heard a female screaming from the rear of the residence, Turnbow said. The screaming continued as the officer approached the house, and fearing urgent circumstances, the officer chose to eschew common procedure of waiting for other officers to respond, entering the back yard of the residence through an open gate, according to Turnbow.

At this point, the officer observed a female on the back porch, still screaming. The officer called out to the female, and as he did so, a large dog attacked the officer without warning, biting his hand, Turnbow said. The officer fired two rounds, killing the dog.

The officer was treated and later released from a local hospital for the bite to the hand, Turnbow said. Charges pertaining to the original domestic disturbance call are being referred to the Toeele City Attorney’s Office.

A body camera was active at the incident, Turnbow said, and footage is expected to be released as soon as possible. The incident is considered an active investigation, and additional information will be released as it is available.
