OGDEN — A family grieving the loss of a family member at a viewing returned to discover that their Ogden home had been burglarized.

Someone took between $10,000 and $15,000 of personal property, plus the family car Monday night, police said.

“It is violating to know someone has been in your house and gone through your drawers and gone through your clothing, gone through your closest and taken things that, you know, some of things were valuable and some of the things really you can’t even place a value on,” Kristin Millard said.

Her great-grandmother's wedding ring was among the stolen items.

“It feels like they’ve taken a part of me, a part of my history,” Millard said.

She said she is baffled because someone in the family is always home and she’s worried the burglars knew they would be gone.

“It’s almost a coincidence,” Millard said.

The viewing the family was attending was for Millard's sister-in-law, Lindsay Richards, a mother of five who suddenly lost her battle with cancer.

“It’s definitely a devastating loss for all of us,” Millard said. “We thought we would have her through the holidays.”

The family thinks the thieves come in through an unlocked back door.

Police recovered Millard’s car Wednesday on Madison Avenue. She was told by investigators that it was in front of a known drug house in Ogden. Investigators are going through it, looking for anything that will lead them to the burglars and the stolen items.

Now, Millard and her family are just trying to focus on what wasn't taken.

“It’s hard to lose things that are important to you, but people mean so much more,” she said. “All of our memories and nobody can take those.”

To help the Millards, they ask that donations be made to the Richards family. The family has set up a donation page on the community fundraising website* www.AnythingForAFriend.com.
