Springville's 12-0 win over Cyprus in the opening round of the Class 4A state softball tournament wasn't special just because it was a playoff victory. The Red Devils were playing for one of their one: a junior shortstop with brain tumors.

Juan Diego senior Brandon Sands knew he only needed one chance to score and give the Soaring Eagle a good shot at its first Class 3A boys soccer state title. With a defense that’s only allowed five goals all season, he had reason to be confident.
