Layton holds off Herriman on penalty kicks for first Class 5A boys soccer title since 2003

Leo Urrutia buried the decisive penalty, and goalkeeper Sam Hunter made the decisive shootout save, as the Lancers won their first state soccer title since 2003 with a 5-3 penalty-kick decision over Herriman in the 5A state final.

With one cut, Hunter Cornia belted a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh to give the Colts their first lead of the game. Cottonwood held on for a 2-1 win over Bingham at Brent Brown Ballpark.

The Spanish Fork and Timpanogos baseball teams will face each other Wednesday in the 4A state semifinals. Both teams have come off of impressive seasons, both winning their own region titles.

Ethan Alexander, Dallas May and Nick Franco each scored a goal in the first half, and J.D. Myers earned the shutout in goal as Herriman blanked Bingham 3-0 in a 5A state semifinal Tuesday at Woods Cross High School.
