SALT LAKE CITY — These are the dog days of spring practice with many things looking the same as the day before, a little groundhog day if you will.

The Utes were not in full pads taking in a bit of a lighter practice before the scrimmage on Saturday.

Here are five things that I noticed at practice today:

Kelvin York back at practice
York has been absent from the playing field for most of the spring and that has hurt him. Lucky Radley, James Poole, and also Karl Williams are getting a ton of reps with the "ones" and York just hasn't been there. York was there today and Kyle Whittingham was very clear after practice that York needed to get out there.

Jeremiah Poutasi is a beast
We had the opportunity to watch the offensive and defensive lines do one on one drills today right in front of us. Poutasi is far and away the best offensive lineman the Utes have. His strength, athleticism, and technique were so obvious.

Offense ahead of defense
The offense continues to look better than the defense to this point. The disclaimer here is that much of the starting defense is "in the pit.". The tempo still looks really fast and both quarterbacks have taken control. Dennis Erickson is letting the quarterbacks throw the ball and throw it deep. There is a ton of talent and potential on offense and they have shown it and made plays against the defense.

DB's
I like what I see from the defensive backs. Utah is replacing basically everything in the defensive backfield. Keith McGill and Justin Thomas are the number one defensive backs right now. How do they look? Off camera I asked Dres Anderson and Kenneth Scott about the defensive back and those two really like what they see out of McGill and Thomas.

Cox in a boot
Third stringer Brandon Cox did not practice today. He was in the pit with a boot on his left foot. Coach Whittingham mentioned this in the post practice comments and he didn't seem worried about (not that he would let that on) but I buy into that.
