RENO, Nev. (AP) — Voter turnout may have been horrendous in the recent election, but a stampede of residents is seeking a vacant Reno City Council seat.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/1uloT4A ) 74 people have applied for the at-large seat vacated by new Mayor Hillary Schieve.

The list of hopefuls includes business owners, activists and community leaders. It also includes Assemblyman David Bobzien and six people who have run unsuccessfully for council seats.

Councilman Paul McKenzie quipped the keen interest shows people are willing to join the council if they don't have to run a campaign.

Each council member will compile a list of their five favorite candidates on Monday. Three finalists will be selected on Dec. 1 and interviewed in a public meeting.

Council members draw a $69,195 salary plus perks.
