PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island gubernatorial candidate Clay Pell has picked up another significant teachers union endorsement.

The Democrat's campaign announced Thursday the Rhode Island Federation of Teachers And Health Professionals is backing him. The union represents more than 10,000 members and is an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers.

Pell already had the backing of the state's largest teachers union, National Education Association Rhode Island. Unions and retirees are suing the state over the 2011 pension overhaul crafted by General Treasurer and fellow gubernatorial hopeful Gina Raimondo.

Pell and Raimondo are facing Providence Mayor Angel Taveras in the Sept. 9 primary.

Pell opposes the use of standardized test scores as a high school graduation requirement and said this week he has serious concerns with implementation of the Common Core standards.
