SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah House has approved a measure to modify the procedure for establishing new school districts.
The bill mandates that school board candidates in new districts run in a primary election.
Right now only existing school districts have primaries.
Bill sponsor Rep. Laura Black, a Sandy Democrat, says the proposal will put school districts in line with all other voting processes in the state.
The House voted unanimously Tuesday to advance the bill to the Senate.
Under the current code a city with a population of at least 50,000 may vote to create a new school district.
