My survival strategy is to make sure we shop for best prices for clothes, food, and all items needed to run a home. We conserve as much energy as possible, hanging clothes out to dry, wash full loads of clothes and dishes. We set our ac theromastat 3 degrees higher, cook several meals at once and freeze for later use. Buy store brands unless name brands have coupons and the item is on sale. Keep lights off in rooms not used and changed to the new light bulbs that are energy efficient. Repair our clothes and make new clothes instead of buying at stores. Using certain items from food storage to supplement what I need instead of buying. Prioritize what is "needs" and what is "wants," repairing appliances instead of buying a new one. Finally, do all my shopping on the same day and map out my shopping area and plan each stop so I am not running in all directios and back-tracking. Just using good common sense can save time and precious money in these tough times.
If you can try really hard for one month to live on as little as possible, then save your paychecks from that month to pay next month's bills. This has really been a lifesaver in our family's life.
Take money out and put it in your savings first thing. That way you won't miss it. Don't touch your savings unless you absolutely have no other choice!
We have been using only one car. Walking to pick up groceries. Turning off lights when not in use. Adjusting our water heater to a lower degree forcing us to take shorter showers. Keep the house colder in the winter and wear sweaters.
Selling things! I have found all sorts of nice-enough things I own that I don't use, and am selling them to build up a savings account.
Stay with the company even if they cut your hours, At least in the end you still have a job.
