SALT LAKE CITY - The big news at Utah's scrimmage Tuesday was made by a player who didn't play.
Junior Quarterback Corbin Louks announced that he has made the decision to transfer to Nevada.
Louks had been working out at safety since learning he had fallen to No. 3 on the depth chart but he wants to play quarterback, which led to the decision.
"I plan to transfer and I feel it is best for the team that I don't drag things out," Louks said in a written statement. "The team needs to concentrate on the game with Utah State and I don't want to be a distraction. Transferring will give me the opportunity to play a position I know and love. I've really enjoyed my two years here at Utah and have made some lifelong friends. I want to thank the coaches, players and fans for all their support."
Head Coach Kyle Whittingham was disappointed to see him go but understands Corbin's decision.
"Corbin's heart is really set on playing quarterback," Whittingham said. "We appreciate everything he has done for our program. He was instrumental in our success last year. Hate to see him go but we wish him well."
As for the scrimmage, Jordan Wynn and Terrance Cain split reps with the first and second team offense. Both Cain and Wynn continue to be even in the battle to become Utah's next starting quarterback.
"It's a two man race and will be for the next 7 to 10 days and then we will make a decision at some point around that time," Whittingham said.
Terrance Cain's first attempt in the red zone drill led to a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jereme Brooks. He feels good about his chances of winning the job.
"If I keep competing and working hard I do think I have a good shot," Cain said.
Jordan Wynn had success as well. He threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to DeVonte Christopher on the second drive of the scrimmage and completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Wesson in the red zone drill.
"I thought I did pretty good," Wynn said. "I started off pretty well. I just gotta keep staying consistent."
Whittingham singled out tight end John Peel, wide receiver DeVonte Christopher, defensive lineman Latu Heimuli, and cornerback R.J. Stanford for their play in today's scrimmage.
He is also pleased with the kicking game as Ben Vroman has a hold on placekicking duties and Sean Sellwood is performing well as the punter.
Several starters sat out the scrimmage including Stevenson Sylvester, Robert Johnson, Joe Dale, Koa Misi, David Reed, Zane Beadles, and Matt Asiata.
