SALT LAKE CITY -- True freshman quarterback Jordan Wynn has landed the No. 1 spot on the depth chart after the first scrimmage of fall camp. Head Coach Kyle Whittingham made the announcement after Friday's practice.

Junior college transfer Terrance Cain is No. 2, leaving Corbin Louks as the odd man out.

Wynn will take 85 to 90 percent of the snaps in practice, but Whittingham was quick to point out that the depth chart isn't final.

"I want to emphasize we have not named a starter," Whittingham said. "It's a chance to sort things out and get some continuity with the ones and twos and so forth. That is our starting point, nothing is etched in stone."

A year ago, Wynn was preparing for his senior season at Oceanside High School in Oceanside, Calif. Now he has the edge to become the starting quarterback for a school that finished last year ranked second in the country in the final Associated Press poll.

"It feels good," Wynn said after Friday's practice. "It shows the hard work is paying off, but it's not final. I'm not going to slow down at all. If anything, I'm going to go even harder now."

Wynn graduated early from high school and was able to participate in spring football.

"Being here in spring, and the progress he made all through spring ball, really positioned himself for the opportunity to win this job in the fall," Whittingham said.

The Utah coaching staff grades every repetition of every drill in practice. Wynn's strong arm, accuracy and grasp of the offense give him the slight edge over his older competitors.

Whittingham is also impressed by the maturity of the 19-year-old signal caller.

"He's mature beyond his years," Whittingham said. "He reminds you of Alex Smith when Alex was a freshman--same demeanor, same attitude, and just a tremendous ability to grasp concepts and retain."
