SALT LAKE CITY — Coaches credit talent and confidence for what makes this year's Utah gymnastics team special. Co-head coach Megan Marsden said the gymnasts decided to have a strong season during their team retreat in September.

“We came up with the theme ‘WILD’ — With Intimidation Let’s Dominate,” said senior co-captain Georgia Dabritz. “It helps keep up the stamina of the team. The fans help us too.”

Marsden added that the gymnasts take the theme to heart. “They begin to dominate and intimidate in warmups. I think other teams take notice early on that they have a team to really contend with. It helps us because the other team goes into it on the defense and worries how they are going to beat this team.”

Utah gymnastics is arguably one of the best dynasties in the sport. This season marks 40 years for co-head coach Greg Marsden and the program. The team is proving it has a chance to return to nationals.

Fourth-ranked Utah (9-0, 5-0 Pac-12) defeated 11th-ranked Stanford (4-6-1, 2-4 Pac-12) Saturday night with dominating effort. The 198.05-195.9 win is resonating a sense of achievement throughout the team. In the last three meets, the Utes have won by an average 2.417.

“We are showing that we are most definitely a top team to contend with,” said Marsden. “It (the score) sends a message to other teams and judges that Utah is legit. We are ready to fight for a championship.”

The Red Rocks travel to Corvallis, Ore., to continue their undefeated season against 12th-ranked Oregon State Friday at 8 p.m. MST.
