SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah football program is ranked No. 17 in the first ever College Football Top 25 rankings released Tuesday evening.

The move to 17th in the CFB rankings is one spot higher than Utah's No. 18 rank in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll and the Amway Coaches Poll that were released Sunday afternoon.

Other Pac-12 teams in the CFB poll include Oregon (5), Arizona (12), Arizona (14) and UCLA (25). At it's current standing, the Oregon Ducks are the best team for a chance to be included in the inaugural four-team College Football Playoff.

The CFB selection committee voted three Southeastern Conference teams in the top four of the 25 teams, with Mississippi State earning the top spot at No. 1, Florida State at No. 2, Auburn at No. 3 and Ole Miss at No. 4.

The select committee will release six more rankings over the course of the football season. Each rankings will be released the Tuesday after each weekend of the season, with the final rankings released Sunday, Dec. 7.

"The College Football Playoff selection committee met for the past two days and we engaged in a lively and detailed discussion about who the best teams are in college football, as of October 26,” said selection chairman Jeff Long in a statement. “We debated, we reviewed facts and statistics, and we used our judgment. There are 18 one-loss teams in the FBS and the differences between many of these teams are slight. The bottom line is it’s early, it’s close and it’s going to change.”
