Misi, Soliai lead NFL locals in week 5

SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah’s alumni playing in the NFL continue to make a name for themselves, with former Utes making highlight plays in the league nearly every week.

In week five of the NFL season, former Utah defensive stars Koa Misi and Paul Soliai made their impact well-know as the pair combined for 12 tackles, a forced fumble and a sack in Miami’s 26-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Former Ute Derrick Shelby also had three tackles for the Dolphins.

Former Utah quarterback Alex Smith led the Kansas City Chiefs to their first 5-0 start in more than a decade, beating Tennessee 26-17. Smith completed 20 of 39 passes for 245 yards, with one interception. Sean Smith also made three tackles and defended two passes for Kansas City.

In this week’s Star-vs.-Ziggy competition, Ansah won the week by making two tackles and forcing a fumble in a 23-9 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Lotulelei made two tackles in Carolina’s loss to Arizona.

Steve Smith had four catches for 60 yards for Carolina.

Other notable Utah performances included Paul Kruger’s two tackles in a 37-24 Cleveland victory over the Buffalo Bills. Former Utah defensive back Brandon Burton had one tackle for the Bills. Also, Chargers safety Eric Weddle registered five tackles for San Diego in its game against the Oakland Raiders. The Raider prevailed, 27-17. Brice McCain had a tackle for Houston in the Texans’ blowout loss to San Francisco, 34-3.

Utah’s Zane Beadles started for the Denver Broncos in their Texas showdown against the Dallas Cowboys. The Broncos went ahead late to beat Dallas, 51-48. Also, former Weber State Wildcat Paul McQuistan started for the Seattle Seahawks in their 34-28 loss to Indianapolis.

Former Aggies star Bobby Wagner made two tackles for the Seahawks, and Robert Turbin carried the ball four times for 14 yards for Seattle.

Highland’s Haloti Ngata made two tackles for the Ravens in their win over Miami.

BYU alumni Brett Keisel and Bryan Kehl sat out the week on byes.
