According to the Humane Society, an estimated 6 to 8 million animals enter shelters every year. Some of these are a beloved pet and only 2 to 5 percent are reclaimed. A group in Park City saw this happening too often and wanted to help, so they created an organization to take animals from shelters and hold onto them until a permanent home could be found. Twenty-five years later this organization is known as Nuzzles & Co.
Nuzzles & Co. is a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue organization dedicated to giving animals a home for as long as they need. They have staff, veterinarians and a state-of-the-art medical clinic on-site to take care of any medical needs for the animals, including shots and spays and neuters.
You may see the Nuzzles & Co name when you visit Tanger Outlet Mall at Kimball Junction. This is their Adoption Center where animals are taken daily to connect with potential owners. Staff members are trained as matchmakers to connect the right animal with a new family. Even after adoption Nuzzles is available to offer counseling or suggestions. Their approach is working since dogs are usually with them an average of two weeks and cats 27 days, so many find their new family.
At night the animals return to the Rescue Ranch. This is a 16,000 square foot facility on 100 acres in Brown's Canyon. Kathleen Toth, chair of the board of directors for Nuzzles & Co, says the ranch is known as the Hilton of Pet Rescue. The dogs have large comfortable kennels and the cats have a beautiful open cat room with plenty of space and sun. You'll also find walking trails and obstacle and agility courses. The overarching goal for Nuzzles & Co is to make Utah a no-kill state by the year 2019 because they believe when an animal has a forever home and a loving family, their purpose has been fulfilled.
