Every year the U.S. government invites thousands of refugees to seek safety and freedom here. Many are forced to flee their homelands and have survived against incredible odds. They step off the plane with their dignity, hope and determination and, often, very little grasp of the English language. A non-native English speaker herself, Sabrina Morales is personally acquainted with this challenge and is acting on her passion to implement a sustainable solution through Linguistica International, which she co-founded with her husband, Rene Gomez.
As a nationwide interpreting and translation company, Linguistica International provides services in over 250 languages, even dialects not commonly spoken. They handle all types of interpreting needs from medical appointments to document translation and financial transactions. In locations where it would be difficult to get an interpreter in person, Linguistica International can provide someone over the phone. One of the big areas they focus on is emergency services such as dispatch centers, courts and other urgent care s. This is important work since as a refugee resettlement community, over 70 different languages are spoken in Salt Lake County alone every day. Utah is home to around 60,000 refugees, and if this group represented a city, it would be one of the state's ten largest.
Any facility serving individuals who don't speak English can access Linguistica International's services, and when calling, they will be connected to an interpreter within 10 seconds. With a network of over 5,000 linguists, in addition to full-time staff in Utah, Linguistica International serves clients nationwide. All interpreters are required to pass a fluency test. Linguistica International has three offices throughout the country, in Connecticut, Washington State and Utah, the company headquarters.
