Studies show there is one important thing you can do for your kids that will increase overall brain functioning, improve cognitive and creative skills, raise self-esteem levels and set foundations for healthy relationships. So, what's that one thing? Sign them up for art class! As the owner and founder of Rachel's Art School for Kids in St. George, Rachel Garner sees proof of this every day.

When she started five years ago, Rachel knew that art classes were disappearing from school curriculums. She grew up in a house where art was encouraged and took classes throughout her life, so she personally saw the difference developing an artistic side can make. So, in 2010, she started giving classes once a week for children of family and friends. The five students she started with have grown to 150 students and still growing.

The specialty at Rachel's Art School for Kids is art classes for kids ages 6 to10. Rachel builds her classes in line with school curriculum, so it's like an after-school program she sponsors privately. She works to thread life lessons in with the classes … like confidence and learning to build upon a mistake or finding a way to work around it.

Rachel says she there are competitors but what keeps the kids coming back to Rachel's Art School for Kids is how she presents everything as a bright and happy art experience. The kids respond and naturally grow to love art because it becomes a creative, positive outlet and they love it.

Rachel also gets to know the kids very well, plus their siblings and parents, so the art class is an extension of her own family. It was her grandma that first inspired Rachel's artistic side in teaching her art. She's become more passionate about art through the years, even going to school to take more classes herself. And now she's passing that excitement on to another generation with Rachel's Art School for Kids. As she continues learning, so do her students — a powerful combination.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
