As a desert state with low annual precipitation, water is a limited commodity in Utah. The goal for Jordan Valley and the other water conservancy districts is to reduce water use per person by 25 percent. They are accomplishing this through public outreach, like the statewide Slow the Flow education campaign and Prepare 60, a 50-year water infrastructure plan being developed among the four largest water conservancy districts. Richard says Prepare 60 is considered a center point to secure Utah's economic future with statewide water planning.
The focal point of all conservation programs at Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District is the beautiful Conservation Garden Park, located at 8275 South 1300 West in West Jordan. Within the last four years, the garden has been enlarged, so it's now 7 acres, and an education center opened. Both helped grow visitation to 40,000. Jordan Valley is also adding three more instructional exhibits on water conservation this year.
Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District recently completed a brand new reverse osmosis water treatment plant to purify existing water. In partnership with Kennecott Copper, they're in the midst of a cleanup project to remediate groundwater contamination over 50 square miles in the southwest corner of the valley. In 2015, Richard says they will also complete construction of a pipeline project to import pristine ground water from the city of Vineyard into the district. This will help Jordan Valley stay ahead of the population growth, so water remains plentiful for their 10 member cities and five water districts.
