When hunting, conventional hearing protection is rarely used because hunters need a heightened sense of awareness. However, shooting without hearing protection can cause hearing damage, which is what was happening to SilencerCo owner Josh Waldron.
SilencerCo in West Valley City has identified a niche in the gun market and is now knocking it out of the park. Josh qualifies the products SilencerCo offers as hearing protection devices that also enhance the shooting experience. This company makes suppressors, also known as silencers, or for .22s, .center fire handguns and all kinds of rifles. They've zeroed in on a market that hasn't been challenged and are changing the landscape of this business. They offer 20 core products and a variety of accessories. The products are in such high demand, it's not uncommon to see backorders of four to six months on the most popular items. Their products are now found in thousands of retailers across the U.S.
They found out folks though silencers were illegal, and that's when they knew they had something. Together with his friend and co-founder, Jonathon Shults, they're working to take the business to the next level, raising awareness about silencers being legal and educating customers on why they're important. They're proud to say SilencerCo is a 100 percent American made product, and they believe in supporting our Utah economy. They buy as much raw production material from Utah vendors with the quality to match their high standards.
Since their launch in 2008, SilencerCo has grown to include 170 employees. They have a full team of researchers, innovators and developers from all walks of life who are tied together with the passion and mission of how to add value to the company. They've also doubled their facility size, so it's now 72,000 square feet.
Around a third of the American population owns or lives with someone who owns a gun, according to ABCNews. And based on personal research Josh conducted by polling customers around the U.S., many people didn't know silencers are not illegal.
