This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Utah continues to gain national attention as a hotspot for technology and innovation. According to Inc. Magazine, in 2014, two separate metro areas ranked in the top 20 for VC funds invested in tech startups: Provo/Orem ranked No. 8 with $462 million in funds for 9 deals, while Salt Lake City/Ogden received $275 million for 16 deals. And companies like Constellation Labs are contributing to our culture of innovation.

Constellation Labs identified a market need with companies who need temporary help and require specialized skills. Their team of engineers works with entrepreneurs to develop products for a broad range of clients, from single-person startups to Fortune 500 companies. The client can hire experienced engineers and developers to have on staff for as long as they need and then become self-sustaining once their product is ready.

This is contract engineering meaning the client owns the intellectual property the team at Constellation Labs creates for them. They don't ask for equity in the company or any future royalties, so this is strictly engineering and product design for hire. The simplest projects can be done within a few days, but very involved ones often span several months. Sometimes this even means mentoring the new startup.

Prior to starting the business three years ago, company founders Jeremy Willden and Martin Johnson had been engineers providing design work. However, they started Constellation Labs so they could collaborate and simplify the setup. They're steadily growing a team of engineers and software developers and typically have about 10 people working on projects at one time.

Jeremy says most of their work at Constellation Labs has been done along the Wasatch Front; however, they've helped companies across North America, Europe and South America. What they tell companies is they don't just build products — Constellation Labs takes pride in providing focused expertise in areas where the company needs help for only as long as they need, even helping recruit staff. They thrive on the excitement of creating something new with every client who comes through their door.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
