This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Mark Durham didn't set out to create a company offering hundreds of products under several brand names 25 years ago. However, that's what he did, and the company he founded, Durham Brands in Salt Lake City, is now growing at a rate of 30 percent every year often listed on the Utah 100. Mark's son, Jeff Durham, is now leading this Utah original into the second generation of family ownership.

It started when Mark was serving Fortune 500 companies by designing and creating client-specific products. He was working for big names like Marriott, Kodak and Xerox. Later he developed a catalogue of over 150 items produced for the U.S. Postal Service. This venture later lead to the founding of Durham Brands.

From the very start, Durham Brands has worked to develop a culture of innovation with their product lines. That's one reason they were the first company to produce a line of handbags with a pouch specifically designed to carry a tablet. The Kaboo bags come with a Tech Pouch, which has shock absorption system. So, even if the bag is dropped, your tablet will be safe. Jeff says there isn't anything like it on the market, and they're staying ahead of the competition, thanks to their forward thinking.

Even with the popularity of the Kaboo, Durham Brands' most popular line is still Gimme, which has a focus on children's hair accessories. If you've ever been out shopping and have seen someone wearing a large blossom in their hair, there's a good chance the Durham team produced it. Jeff's sister came up with the first product line, and they've continued to develop it. Their scrapbooking line is sold in major retailers in the U.S. and is also experiencing growth internationally.

Dunham Brands employs a lean team, who work in a flat environment where decisions are made quickly, because all have authority and autonomy.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
