In the next 5 years, 3 million plus upper-tier executives will be leaving the workforce. These executives have filled, on average, 2.3 roles and are versed in 5.3 specialized subjects, according to ExecBrainTrust.com. Succession planning and leadership development is beyond important for your business to continue and thrive — it's imperative. A business wins by making sure that executives and teams are aligned and working together with the tools they need to build consensus of where they're going and why.

Tanner LLC in Salt Lake City, a top-tier accounting firm working with major corporations in Utah and beyond, is the largest locally-owned accounting firm in Utah with 80 professionals on board. They've been inspired by this trend and their own extensive portfolio research. They discovered that 70 percent of their clients have 50 percent of their leadership retiring within the next couple of years.

They developed the Tanner Leadership Solutions Practice to help clients in this process. They're the only accounting firm in the country with a leadership solutions practice. The Tanner partners made the decision to create the new program under the direction of Jeff Bickel, Tanner managing partner and, Ray Ellison. They brought organizational psychologist Gary Vickrey and Dan Griffiths on board to create this new business initiative, designed to assist clients with executive-level development.

Their motive for developing the Tanner Leadership Solutions Practice was to help clients address people issues. Not to mention, many were in need of help with succession planning. They now offer workshops that complement their leadership development program on everything from talent management to leadership classified systems and emerging leader development programs, with a focus on engagement and alignment.

They've already found when mentoring executives that it takes about two years of mentoring and coaching to really affect long-lasting change. Development plans for key executives will generally last about two years, and it's critical to have someone like Gary identify trends because of his extensive experience. Their program is designed to play into strength and focus on engagement and company alignment.
