This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

When Tom Alder, owner of Alderwood Fine Art in Salt Lake City, went back to school to get his Master of Art History degree seven years ago, he did it mainly because he loves art. At the time, he was deeply involved in banking and planned to stay with it. However, the week after he got his degree, he got a call about running a gallery in Salt Lake City, and it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

So, seven years later, Tom is deeply engrained in the art world with a revamped gallery known as Alderwood Fine Art and located in a beautiful facility on South Temple. The gallery has wide selection of over 1,000 different masterpieces by western contemporary and early Utah artists. With just over 2,500 square feet of display space, they host public shows once per month, including the Gallery Stroll on the third Friday of every month.

One of Tom's specialties as the owner of Alderwood Fine Art is a strong connection with his client base and what artwork they might be interested in. He created a database of all his clients with information on what artists they love. As soon as pieces come in he thinks might be a fit, he takes a picture of the painting, then sends all the information about it to that person. Clients love this personalized service!

He has also found a unique way to represent oversize art at Alderwood Fine Art. Instead of having the artist ship the painting to the gallery and incur high shipping costs, he has them take professional photos then posts them to his website, alderwoodfineart.com. This is a win-win for artists and clients and allows Tom to act as a broker for large art pieces.

Because of his extensive art experience, Tom is versed in the unique originals of early Utah art, and he loves using that knowledge to serve clients at Alderwood Fine Art. And he'll be the first to say his wife Linda is an important part of his success.
