The year was 2008, not the ideal time for starting a new business development. Yet, that didn't stop Bill Child, who you may as CEO of RC Willey, from partnering with David Layton and Jeff Flamm to venture into the resort business, building a facility now known as Koloa (kuh-low-uhh) Landing at Poipu Beach on the island of Kauai.

The first phase of the project was completed in 2010 and has been enjoying great success. Recent occupancy rates at Koloa Landing have hovered right around 80 percent. They're entertaining guests from all over the world, including many from Utah. The resort has rooms large enough to host an entire family; semi-private elevators; sports facilities like soccer fields, volleyball and a putting green; plus two pools, a waterfall and access to the world-famous Poipu Beach.

The next building phase is already in progress and will include over 200 single, one-bedroom and studio rooms and a convention center with capacity for 600 people. There will also be a large pool with slides and grottos, making this the most luxurious and complete resort in the Hawaiian Islands.

While Koloa Landing is growing in popularity, Bill is also working hard to spread the word. He passes out cards telling about it. It's also part of the Wyndham family which has 7,000 properties around the world, so they fly the Wyndham flag with pride. However, Koloa Landing is one of only 34 Wyndham grand resorts worldwide.

The resort sits on 25 acres of tropical land, highlighted by gorgeous views and easy access to Hawaii's most undeveloped and beautiful island - Kauai. The resort is made of up five buildings with up to 24 suites per building. It also has 85 residential suites, which range in size from 1,000 to 3,500 square feet.

Although 2008 wasn't an ideal time to begin such a project, Bill says Koloa Landing at Poipu Beach has really taken off and is doing well. He anticipates the second phase will make it even more of a destination.
