Robert Redford has made his impact on society with his acting career; however, his contribution to the independent film industry through the world-renown Sundance Film Festival in Utah is unprecedented. Redford and the Sundance Film Festival will continue to provide the stage for independent films and talent; however, Sundance wants to emphasize the platform, support and focus for big-time documentaries.
Since the first Sundance Film Festival in 1981 the popularity of this annual event has grown beyond the first humble group of 10 emerging filmmakers' imaginations. Thousands of films and talent have been discovered because of this Utah treasure. In fact, because of the national and international exposure, Sundance Film Festival is the top film debut festival in the world. So, there has been a sense of limited ticket access and a lack of recognition for Utah locals.
When you consider the economic impact, Sundance films this year will be impressive with the 2014 festival opening January 16. The Sundance Film Festival brings around $70 million into the Utah economy, drawing nearly 46,000 attendees. The festival also supported over 1,400 jobs, which is critical in helping us lead out in the nation for having a low unemployment total.
Through a group of private investors and film directors, a new group has emerged, appropriately called Impact Partners. They want to put their support and message through film about major social issues facing us both domestically and internationally. As Impact Partners continues their work, keep your eye open for their next social investment.
The Sundance Film Festival came up with the Locals Only Pass so locals can get tickets and enjoy the festival. The films are not just in Park City but in Salt Lake City with several local venues including Tower, Broadway, Rose Wagner and the City Library that are open, representing thousands of tickets every day right in downtown.
Chances are the festival won't completely sell out so you can probably get tickets. The Sundance Film Festival is exactly what's right with Utah.
