This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

The Orthogrid is a measurement system surgeons can use to have an intraoperative assessment of leg lengths and offset. The surgeon places the grid under the patient during the surgery. With the help of a low-dose x-ray machine, the grid projects exact measurements over the patient's anatomy that the surgeon can use as a guide.

One of the biggest complications of hip replacement surgery is to make sure the legs are not lengthened or shortened during the procedure. It's a problem that Boise-based Orthogrid Systems addresses, says company owner Edouard Saget. The Orthogrid is a better way to provide cost-effective, accuracy-improving procedures. It's easy to use with no set up. Plus, as a Class I device, there's low risk.

The idea for the Orthogrid came from two surgeons performing total hip procedures when they saw the need for another tool to deliver the best results. And that's how Orthogrid was born.

Using the grid helps reduce operation and may improve long-term outcomes as implants are better positioned in the body for longevity and stability. Since two of the biggest problems with hip replacement are leg length inequality and dislocation, which happens when the ball pops out of the socket if the patient gets into an awkward position, surgeons are seeking techniques to avoid them With Orthogrid, surgeons can see where the implants are going in relation to key landmarks and get an exact leg length and cup socket position, reducing the risk of dislocation.

Orthogrid patented the idea and Edouard's team in downtown Boise brought it to the market for others surgeons ... With new health regulations, cost reductions are an important focus for the medical community, which requires more efficiency in the operating room, but not at the cost of accuracy.
