This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

They say necessity is the mother of invention... In truth, desperation must be a close aunt... At least, that's the way Dave Staheli found it when creating Staheli West...

He remembers well the summer of 1994. It was hot and moisture was scarce... While this is a concern for anybody, it's especially a concern for farmers trying to harvest their hay... Why? Well, to get the best harvest from hay, you need moisture---actually, you need dew.... And that summer, there was no dew.... Dave waited two weeks for natural dew to form so he could harvest his hay... It never came.... And that's when necessity and desperation joined forces.

Dave brought a box of over-dried hay into the kitchen, attached a hose to his wife's pressure cooker, and discovered his own form of moisture for baling hay..... The idea for Staheli West was born.

Staheli West now manufactures and distributes the Dew Point 6110.... This patented device produces and injects steam into cured hay to enable commercial hay growers to bale hay anytime it's dry without waiting for natural dew to form..... It hooks up between the tractor and baler, providing optimized moisture conditions so you speed up your hay harvest and produce a more valuable and consistent end product. Customers report the computerized machine pays itself off in just one to two crops.

Staheli West has more than doubled their business every year since they launched four years ago, expanding across the Western U.S. and now into international markets. Better yet, 60 percent each machine is made right here in Utah, 40 percent in Cedar City alone. With a machine like this, Dave says it's important to provide training for new customers each year on how to use it. It's been so popular, he had to expand and do several regional trainings this year.

Before selling any Staehli West machine, Dave uses online video conferencing to do a full assessment of each farm to ensure the Dew Point fits .... This helps keep the whole operation balanced.
