This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Nothing like a good economic downturn and a job elimination to get your creative entrepreneurial juices flowing. So, Alan Green decided that he wanted to be more in control of his own destiny and become a business owner. And a franchise was the way he wanted to do it, especially since 80 percent of business in the U.S. comes from franchises. They also employ nearly 18 million people and account for one in eight U.S. private-sector jobs, according to CNBC.

Alan spent a year researching franchises, taking a thoughtful and methodical approach to lining everything up. He wanted a business that couldn't be easily disrupted, was already generating revenue and would allow him and his wife to have life balance. Molly Maid provided exactly the opportunity he was looking for.

Since taking over two and a half years ago, Alan has grown his Molly Maid franchise at a rate of around 30 percent every year. He's made quality a major focus in every area of the business, from better training and customer service to new equipment. His growth has been so strong that in 2012, he was named Rookie of the Year at the annual Molly Maid convention for being the top first-time franchise owner in the nation.

Another important focus for Alan is supporting his employees. One of the first things he did after coming on board with Molly Maid was invest in better cleaning products, new uniforms and logoed cars to make sure all his employees knew how much he appreciated them. In the mornings before the staff leaves, Alan is usually outside helping scrape their windshields and wishing them well. He's grown the team from 12 up to 28 and loves watching his employees' succeed and be able to provide for their family.

In this business, customer service is essential. All work at Molly Maid is guaranteed 100 percent, so if you aren't satisfied, they will keep coming back until you are. They have a strong base of customers, and last year they had over 100 referrals for new business.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
