This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

As a fifth generation Utah farmer, you could say farming is in Shayn Bowler's blood. He's now working the land his grandpa worked when he started the farm 75 years ago! Although farming can be challenging, Shayn and his wife, Kristen, are making it work with their business Utah Natural Meat.

Utah Natural Meat specializes in providing grass-fed beef, lamb, pork, chicken and turkey from their farm in West Jordan as well as fresh eggs, raw cow's milk and produce. Their goal is to provide you with healthy, flavorful meat. You know it comes from animals raised without antibiotics or growth hormones. This means they can vouch 100 percent for what's on your plate. In fact, they're the only ones in the state to have a USDA exemption to process poultry for resale.

Shayn says the approach they take with the animals is a return to basics where they feed their animals exactly what they're designed to be fed. For example, the Bowlers' Corriente (core-ee-n-tay) cows are raised on their 200 acre ranch in Mount Pleasant with plenty of grass to eat. You won't see these cows eating any grain. The chickens have a half an acre pasture where they can roam and live on a diet of grass and all-natural poultry feed. This approach means the animals don't get as big, but their meat has great flavor, less fat and better vitamin content.

Interestingly enough, Utah Natural Meat is the last farm in Salt Lake County whose sole source of income comes from the animals they raise. For more information, visit utahnaturalmeat.com.
