They did it the hard way, but once again the Emery Spartans are celebrating a 2A state baseball championship.
They dominated last year’s tournament without suffering a loss. This year the defending champs fell to Beaver 4-3 in the second round and had to fight their way back through the loser’s bracket to earn a chance to repeat.
They had to win three games in one day starting with the same Beaver team that put them in this position.
Following a 13-6 win over the Beavers they faced the daunting task of beating Grand twice.
An eight-run explosion in the seventh inning gave the Spartans a 12-3 win in game 1, forcing a second game.
That second game was a battle as both teams racked up hits and runs. The score was even at 8 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Emery took the lead for good. Their four-run inning gave them an 11-8 lead and they added four more runs in the sixth, which was more than enough to complete a 16-9 victory and remarkable one-day run.
It’s the third baseball state championship for Emery.
